History of Gatewood

Town and Country Real Estate began planning
Gatewood in the early 1970's. The vision was to create a unique
example of southern living in contemporary design. There are
450 acres of rolling hills with hardwoods, pines and abundance
of dogwoods surrounding the tranquil lakes.
Construction of the main entrance and roads
began in July 1973. Town and Country decided in October 1973
to establish a Property Owners Association to maintain the
value and amenities of the common property under protective
covenants and restrictions. The clubhouse and swimming pool
were completed in 1975. Shortly thereafter 4 of the Racquet
Clubs 12 tennis courts were completed. Four tennis courts
were added in 1976 and four completed in 1978.
The first home was completed in December
1978. In the early stages of Gatewood an Equestrian Boarding
and Training Center for members was built. Due to dwindling
demand the center was closed and transformed into common property.
The community was developed in five phases and undeveloped
property is available for future growth. The transfer of all
common properties from Town and Country to the Gatewood Property
Owners Association was completed in October 1997.
